Art Deco 1930s Sideboard, Drinks/Cocktail Cabinet, Gin Bar, Blue and Gold

This absolutely stunning 1930s sideboard is certainly a statement piece! We love its elegance, with beautifully rounded curves and classic Art Deco style. We may think of Art Deco as being all zigzags and crisp, sharp, lines, but curves were also used by designers and architects working in the 1920s and 30s. William Van Alen designer of the Chrysler Building, that iconic, Art Deco, building in the Manhattan skyline, used stepped, rounded, panels to dazzling effect. We think the rounded arches of this sideboard are fabulous and pure Art Deco.
 
Not only is it beautiful to look at, it's also hugely practical. With three cupboards and two drawers, there is plenty of storage space. Each shelf is removable, giving you lots of options. The lovely moulding details are an added bonus!
 
It's fair to say that when we found this sideboard, it wasn't looking its best, but, we knew we could make it shine again. We chose to create a custom, deep, inky blue, paint colour, which we think looks amazing. We used Fusion Mineral Paint colours Midnight Blue, Liberty Blue and Coal Black. The inside also needed some love, so we created another custom colour blend, using Fusion Mineral Paint colours, Cranberry and Coal Black. This luscious, deep claret, colour, looks incredible against the blue. The moulding details have been highlighted with Posh Chalk Pigments in Byzantine Gold with an antique glaze. We have added layers of a Satin water-based varnish inside and out to give added sheen and protection. The drawers are lined with an Art Deco style paper, which is removable. The handles are a real feature of this sideboard. The old handles were broken and not particularly attractive, so we made the decision to replace them. We've chosen premium quality handles from Dowsing & Reynolds. These are their Chrysler handles - named, appropriately, after the Chrysler building. Their shape echoes the shape of the cabinet - a perfect combination! The satin brass finish looks fabulous against the blue. The two side cupboards both lock with a key. The original escutcheons were broken, so we have replaced them with vintage, brass, escutcheons from the 1930s. The keys are new. The central cupboard has a catch lock at the top of the inside of the left hand door and on the inside of the right hand door we have added a magnetic catch.

We are always delighted to be able to rescue and refinish beautiful, good quality, vintage, furniture. We lavish them with care and attention, clean them thoroughly and breathe new life into them, but we can't make them look like new - and we don't want to! These are character items and their imperfections are an integral part of their story. As a vintage piece from the 1930s it does show signs of use and age, but these do not detract from its style and practicality. There are some dinks and areas of wear to the wood, as you would expect from a cabinet that is over 80 years old, but there is plenty of life left in this gorgeous piece. There is some very minor gapping to the top of the drawers/cabinet doors, but they all work well. We have added a magnetic catch to the top of the central inner right hand door. The right door is very slightly proud of the left when closed, but you can then adjust the left door by pulling this forward slightly once both are closed, they then sit together as can be seen on the pictures. Please note that you can see the grain of the wood beneath the paint. If you are looking for an off the shelf, mass produced, item with a perfect factory finish, this isn't the cabinet for you, but if you want a special and unique one-off, that you definitely won't find anywhere else - you've found your perfect match!
