Mid Century Modern Chest of Drawers, 1950s, Steamer trunk style, Teal and black
This 1950s chest of drawers reminded us of the steamer luggage you'd see in the 1920s and 1930s. The trim detail and shape and size of the piece has more than a look of the luxury steamer trunks of that era. They would appear to be a standard trunk, but would then open up and convert into wardrobes, perfect for storing all your clothes for a cruise or other long journey.
This piece was made by Elliots of Newbury and is date stamped April 1956 or 1958 (the ink is a little faded so it's hard to make it out). It's a very heavy, sturdy and finely crafted piece of furniture with dovetail joints to the wooden drawers. The edges of the drawers are gently curved, reminiscent of the Streamline Moderne, streamlined style. It's such a great size too - with 5 drawers offering plenty of storage; the bottom 3 drawers are nice and deep.
We chose a beautiful custom blend of 2 Fusion Mineral Paint colours to create this fabulous rich teal colour; Pressed Fern and Midnight Blue. We have added a matt varnish to give added protection. The trim detail is painted Fusion Mineral Paint's Coal Black, to give the effect of the black leather, protective, bands used on some steamer trunks - and the leather drawer pulls we have added complement the look. They are English leather in black with black zinc studs. The sides of the drawers have been cleaned and finished with wax to ensure they run smoothly. The insides have been thoroughly cleaned and refreshed with orange oil to bring out their natural colour and enrich the wood.
This is a stunning and unique piece that would fit well into the, ever popular, dark décor, interior style, as well as give a dramatic flourish to a more neutral space.
We are always delighted to be able to rescue and refinish beautiful, good quality, vintage, furniture. We lavish them with care and attention, clean them thoroughly and breathe new life into them, but we can't make them look like new - and we don't want to! These are character items and their imperfections are an integral part of their story. As a vintage piece from the 1950s it does show signs of use and age, but these do not detract from its style and practicality.
There are some dinks and areas of wear to the wood veneer, as you would expect from a chest of drawers that is over 60 years old, but there is plenty of life left in this gorgeous piece. The sides and insides of the drawers have been thoroughly cleaned and kept as natural wood. Please note that you can see the texture and grain of the wood beneath the paint.
If you are looking for an off the shelf, mass produced, item with a perfect factory finish, this isn't the chest of drawers for you, but if you want a special and unique one-off, that you definitely won't find anywhere else - you've found your perfect match! If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
